New Venture - Befriending cafe

NEW VENTURE AT THE OLD PARISH CENTRE
Over the last few months I have been looking around me and realising that loneliness is one of the biggest problems we have in our society. I started wondering if there was anything we as a church could offer the community to help, then the Guild had a speaker one afternoon on Befriending.
I went along and listened to the talk which was by a lady called Lesley Haycock. She is funded by Fife Council and has set up a Befriending Scheme at Castle Furnishing, purely to tackle the problem of loneliness. There is also a drop in lounge open a couple of times a week. This scheme deals with mainly retiral aged people, and there is a great need amongst those below retiral age too.
Loneliness has a huge effect on both our physical and our emotional wellbeing. Long term, the effects can be devastating, resulting in many more cases of clinical depression and dementia, physical debilitation and eventually loss of independence.
Although it would be too big a job to actually set up a Befriending scheme, my aim is to hold a fortnightly Befriending café, every second Tuesday afternoon from 2pm – 4pm where people who are already set up with a Befriender can come. Also anyone within the church who might have a friend or neighbour who is suffering with loneliness can come along. We hope to do an activity each time such as crafts, singing, gentle exercises, gardening.
I would like to think we could make a start after the Easter holidays. I’m sure they will be fun afternoons and will hopefully brighten the day of the people who come along.
It would be great to have a rota of volunteers to help with this venture. There will only be two afternoons a month so volunteers would probably only have to give a couple of hours each month.
If anyone feels interested in this and would like to give some time to helping the lonely please get in touch with me.
