Amnesty International Write for Rights Campaign. Each year many of you join us in Cupar Justice and Peace Group in taking part in this campaign. Material will be available today and we hope that you will join with us again.

‘Why do we need to take action? In country after country, people’s freedom – to speak out against injustice, to live on their ancestral lands, to not be discriminated against – is under threat. Our letters, words and actions will put pressure on authorities to take immediate action, so that those who abuse and torture will be brought to justice. And those unjustly imprisoned will taste freedom once again. Imagine being locked away, alone, not knowing if anyone cares where you are. Now imagine receiving a letter from someone you don’t know, telling you they believe in you and the peaceful cause you stand for.. That’s what real letters can do: bring hope to people in the direst of situations. And when they arrive in huge numbers, they are also an unmistakable reminder to the prison authorities and others that the world is watching. Those letters not only bring great solace, but they can also help make people safer. Every year, real change happens because of your letters and actions. People wrongly imprisoned are released. Torturers are brought to justice. And people in prison are treated more humanely. Albert Woodfox finally walked free in February 2016 after nearly 44 years in solitary confinement in a US prison: ‘I can’t emphasise enough how important letters from people around the world is. It gave me a sense of worth…[and] strength.”’ For more information contact Celia  (gandc.armitage@gmail.com  01334 656 611) or see the Amnesty website: https://www.amnesty.org/en/get-involved/write-for-rights/
