The Context for the Role
Cupar Old Parish Church sits at the centre of the market town of Cupar and is well established as a community meeting place for all ages in the Old Parish Centre. The church aims to be a Christian community “where everyone matters”, and through worship, discipleship and fellowship to encourage all ages in their faith in Jesus Christ. We recognise the potential to connect with the rising generation through creative youth ministry, and are looking for a person who will give the lead in engaging with youth and developing a sustainable youth programme. Responsible to: The Kirk Session of Cupar Old Parish Church
Purpose: To develop a sustainable youth programme. This programme will reach out to youth in the community and provide spiritual development and direction to youth within the church.
Responsibilities and Tasks
To develop creative approaches to engaging and retaining youth from P5 to S6
To engage and build relationships with the pre-teenagers and youth in the church
To create paths for faith and discipleship for young people
To organise social and fun events for the young people
To take an active part in the life of Cupar Old Parish Church as appropriate.
To support the spiritual formation and discipleship of young people within the church family.
To provide support, encouragement for and walk with our young people.
To build relationships with youth focused community groups and develop a youth outreach programme including street work
To build our congregational gifts to work effectively with youth
The immediate areas of focus would be to:
Build relationships with the young people in the church
Leadership and development of a weekly programme for a youth group (High School age) for youth in the church. Date/time of this group to be established.
Regular programme of social activities for P5-7 age group to support relationships and connections
Introduction of outreach activity to engage with young people in our community
Schools programme at Bell Baxter High School
Develop a planned approach for our youth work
We are looking for someone with……
A lively Christian faith who is confident sharing personal testimony
Skills in pastoral work and spiritual development of youth
Proven leadership ability and team-building capability
Experience in youth work and establishing programmes
Confident communicator who can engage young people
Great organisational skills with an ability to adapt to changing needs and anticipate future requirements
A people person at ease with youth and in networking among strangers
Practical awareness of diversity of contemporary family life
Excellent listening skills and an ability to discern what emerges as the Spirit guides
A support group will work with the successful candidate to act as a sounding board for ideas and issues, and to offer local knowledge on engaging with the congregation and community.
Terms and Conditions
Salary is £7,020 to £9,360, depending on experience, for 15 hours per week.
Monthly timesheets to be submitted with hours worked. Expenses will be paid.
Position to be reviewed after 6 months.
Subject to disclosure under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007, the successful applicant would be appointed from September/October 2018.
